Making Pickled Limes for Refugees – Heart for the Unreached Ministry

HEART FOR THE UNREACHED is a local ministry serving hundreds of legal refugees brought here from over 30 countries to resettle in Fort Worth. Leaders Kika Jamir and his wife, Dr Anugula, have established a familiar presence with these families who arrive with virtually nothing, very little English, and from other religious backgrounds. They welcome families with simple gifts of rice and flour, pickled limes, furniture, and clothing, helping to meet their immediate needs. Over time, they build trust among these refugee families. Many eventually ask Kika and Anung the reason for their kindness to complete strangers, which opens a door to tell them about Jesus.

Several years ago, St Andrew’s hosted the first “pickle making project” to make jars of fermented spiced limes, a special canned condiment that reminds the refugees of their own culture. Teams take the finished jars of pickles when visiting a new family, again opening a door with a homemade gift. We hope many parishioners will take part in Part 1 of this project and understand more how Heart for the Unreached serves refugees in our community.

Lime and spice prep stations are limited by space and utensils, so signing up for a shift is important to organize the work, with 10 people per shift.

Please note: Those who come to help on this project must wear closed-toed shoes. Nitrile gloves will be provided. Young children may not take part in this project given safety concerns.

Watch for Part 2 of this project, the canning of the fermented limes, planned for August.
